Mobilizing Victimhood: Situating the Victim in Canadian Conservatism

Abstract This article offers an examination of the discursive significance “victim” in Conservative Party Canada through a critical discourse analysis two key pieces legislation (Bill C-10 and Bill C-36) tabled by Harper government. The central argument contends that while all populist arguments may be form victim argument, not conservative are populist—particularly ones directed at issues related to women gender equality. finds that, perhaps due reactive nature ideology, politicians adopt “ambidextrous” approach victims—mobilizing distinct and, times, contrasting sets arguments. concludes proposing possible explanations for this ambidexterity, one stemming from literature on organizational management other theorizations ideology.
